What would you give up for love? A failing marriage? A family? Or maybe even your dream job? Richard Lachlan is perpetually stuck between a rock and a hard place. He’s the primary enabler for his alcoholic father. He works for an idiotic vice president with incompetent co-workers who are all vying for a promotion and higher pay. On top of it all, his husband has grown more and more cold and distant as the years pass by. Then, the biggest monkey wrench Richard could have imagined was thrown into his plans, and how he has to lie to the American public and sacrifice his feelings and beliefs for a man that doesn’t care about him. Overall, the poor guy feels like he can’t catch a break. That is, until he meets Val, a handsome hippy who likes to hang out around Capitol Hill as a one-man protest. The one thing that he wants most is the one thing Richard is least able to give truth. Richard isn’t afraid of secrets and he isn’t afraid of truth. He’s more worried about what will happen to those he loves when these truths comes out.

‘Love and Legislature’ may feel a little too real to some readers! Politics can hide a lot of sins and what you see isn’t always the truth. There is a President and VP who may not have the countries best interest at heart. Richard works for the VP and is supposed to help him look like a good guy. When Richard discovers the VP has caused a car accident, while drunk, he has his work ‘cut out for him!’ His scruples come into question the more he discusses the situation with Val, a man who has been hanging around outside the capital building. Richard’s entire world shifts, at work and on the home front, and he has to look at the past and the future much more closely before he can move ahead!Product details

Love and Legislature Peter Styles Books Reviews
This was a pretty deep book that felt both emotionally and philosophically heavy, in a good way. First of all, I quite like how characters are seen as complex, 3D people who aren’t completely bad or completely good (though the vice president might be totally bad; or at least, the book didn’t show him to have any redeeming qualities!)
The main theme of the book, from what I see, is how can you help people and change the world if you’re forced to do unethical, immoral things to survive? It was truly intriguing, when you’re faced with Richard’s initial perspective that “this is the way it is. I have no choice.” But Val assures him that there is always a choice. There are ways you can change the world without becoming a corrupt politician. Val has such a strong and enlightening spirit! I enjoyed reading about his budding friendship with Richard.
However, Val also expressed an opinion that I have to disagree with. Val thinks that doing things such as giving money to charity and helping friends move, doesn’t make “much of a tangible impact,” and that “none of [it] really matters.” Well, I personally believe that even if you do something as “minor” as cheering a friend up on a day that they’re feeling depressed, you ARE doing something that matters, and this is an act that should be treasured and appreciated.
In my view, many of us don’t value the little good deeds as much as we should. I care a lot about making an impact on the individual level (e.g. making a particular person happy during this particular moment; greatly improving a friend’s life because of your moral support; being an inspiring example to someone who has gone through a similar kind of hell and survived, etc.) To a certain friend of mine who has dramatically changed my life for the better, I would say to him, “Not to make myself sound super important, but even if I’m the only person whose life you’ve changed, that already makes you an ultra incredible person!”
The structure of Love and Legislature feels even tighter and more focused than most romance novels!
Overall, Love and Legislature was great! Especially in its emotional intensity and how much it made me think.

I loved this book, the characters of Richard, and Val was wonderful.
Good story, good characters. I was especially taken with his familial relationships and how resolved them. Good read! Thank You

This was just an okay read for me. I need to say upfront that I do not like to read books with with political themes, established married couple with one cheating. This pretty much would have been a DNF for me but Peter drew me in.The story revolves around Richard, one time bright energetic idealist; thinking he could help change the world as an assistant. to the vice president. However, he found out his dreams came to crashing end as the years flew by to be the lap dog to keep and cover up V.P. mistakes; not changing the world he so envisage. The current one, a really tragic event. crosses Richard's moral compass. Throw his is marriage of ten years to Hunter crumbling, his politician mom, his alcoholic father all pulling at him. He meets Val, a hippy type individual, who strikes up a friendship and claims to know a little bit about the tragic event facing the V.P. I am not going to say any more but it was very engaging and entertaining read. Peter knows how to pull you in with writing, his sentence structure, his word usage and his imagination. I have enjoyed each book I have read by Peter; some books I may have initially not like it but I am always pulled in by the magic of Peter's imagination. I would recommend this to anyone wanting a good entertaining read.

What can I say? Peter Styles. Never a disappointment. Never a truer word was said about our political system as to what was written in this book. Fiction? I think not. A biography? Possibly.
When I first started this book, I was a bit lost. I stopped put it down and came back. My mind needed to clear. I restarted and read. Cover ups. It's probably an everyday occurrence on Capital Hill. Richard is stuck in the middle of it. All the while, dealing with a loveless marriage, a cut throat domineering mother, not to mention enabling his alcoholic father. The one bright moment becomes Val. Most overlook him as just some homeless, protesting man. Yet he's far from that and it takes Richard time to see that. He becomes Richard's saving light.
Love and Legislature is a journey involving two men who yearn for some peace in the dark corners of DC's troubles.
Everyone around the main character was horrible. His parents, his husband, his boss. I really dislike stories where the spouse is cheating and you have to read the whole experience. Smh I felt so stressed reading this I just skimmed it after about 30%. I don't read to feel stressed. I read to escape. RL is stressful enough. If I'd known what this story entailed I wouldn't have bothered buying it much less reading it. If, by chance, you happen to read for the reasons I do I recommend skipping this book. If you care to read about cheating spouses skip this book.
